Chairman of the PEWARTA Dinner Organiser, Wilfred Pilo, said the association not only serves as a journalism platform, but also serves as an important platform in uniting journalists and media photographers, especially after going through a challenging period post-Covid-19 pandemic.

According to him, before the dinner, the PEWARTA Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held to assess the achievements of the association, as well as to appreciate the contributions of the previous leadership since 2019.

“Apart from the AGM, the organisation of this dinner aims to strengthen relations between PEWARTA members and strategic partners and stakeholders in the media industry. The presence of many columnists and journalists tonight proves strong support for the association,” he said.

Wilfred also informed that PEWARTA has channeled contributions of more than RM200,000 to media practitioners since its establishment, in line with the association's objectives to look after the welfare of journalists and photographers, provide skills training, and expand professional networks.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information, and UKAS), Abdullah Saidol, and the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) for the recognition of PEWARTA as one of the six registered associations in Sarawak to receive special incentives announced by the Sarawak Premier at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) last month.

Meanwhile, UKAS Acting Director, Mohamed Faisal Shah Ali said that PEWARTA should be used as an example to other associations, as its membership consists of experienced and credible media practitioners.

"PEWARTA plays an important role in ensuring that the integrity and ethics of journalism are maintained. Congratulations to the new leadership and I hope that this association continues to be relevant and competitive," he said.

At the AGM, PEWARTA also announced the leadership line-up for the 2025 to 2028 term, with Peter Sibon retaining his position as President.

The Secretary position is now held by Kadir Edison replacing Karen Bong, while Adrian Lim has been appointed as Treasurer replacing Nancy Nais.

PEWARTA hopes that the association will continue to grow as the main voice of media practitioners in Sarawak and become a strong platform in championing the welfare, professionalism and sustainability of the journalism industry in the state.

Also present were Senior Press Secretary to Sarawak Governor Samuel Simon, veteran journalists Dr Toman Mamora, Sulok Tawie, Martin Yee, Caroline Anne Jackson, Churchill Edward, Sarawak Tribune Chief Editor Christopher Aden Negrace, Bernama Bureau Chief Hamdan Ismail, as well as media practitioners around Kuching.
