"There are a few primary schools in Sarawak with only four to five pupils"

KUCHING, Dec 16 2025: Over 50 per cent of the 1,200 primary schools in Sarawak are with less than 150 pupils, Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Roland Sagah Wee Inn said.

Roland Sagah Wee Inn: Schools with low enrollment is a challenge in rural Sarawak

“There are even schools with only four to five pupils,” he said in his speech at the 11th Asia Pacific Conference on Exercise and Sports Science (APCESS 2025) here today.

Sagah’s text of speech was read by his deputy Dr Annar Rapa’ee.

He said this is a challenge of education in rural Sarawak involving hundreds of schools with low enrollment.

He, however, stressed that the well-being of the pupils will continue to be maintained, stating that among the inclusive approaches that need attention is the implementation of physical activities and sports that are adapted to local conditions so that they can provide real benefits to students in rural and interior areas.

He added that this reality requires a physical activity approach that is simple, low-cost and practical, but still able to have a positive impact on the health and well-being of the pupils.

He  stressed that the well-being of students cannot be separated from the welfare and health of teachers.

"Reducing the number of examinations in schools is one of the measures to reduce pressure on the pupils.

“The health, motivation and resilience of teachers and students are interrelated in creating a healthy learning environment.

“However, teachers are now facing an increasingly challenging workload, including adapting to digital learning and the need to support students who have been affected by the pandemic,” he explained.

He emphasized the role of APCESS 2025 as an important platform to bring together experts from various fields to formulate evidence-based solutions.
