Cloud-seeding ops expected to be executed over catchment areas from Sept 3 to 5, says Uggah

KUCHING, Aug 31 2026: Cloud-seeding operations are expected to be executed over catchment areas from Sept 3 to 5, if weather conditions meet the established criteria.

Deputy Premier Douglas Uggah said that the operations aim to help address the haze situation while boosting water levels in dams.

However, he said the operations require a suitable and conducive environment to be carried out.

"We have also informed the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) to proceed with cloud seeding, but I want the public to understand that cloud seeding utilizes salt.

"To execute it, we require clouds as a source or cloud formations; however, if there are no clouds, it means environmental conditions are not suitable or conducive for cloud seeding," he told reporters after chairing Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) today.

Uggah, who is also SDMC chairman, said it is not that the government is unwilling to conduct the operations, but rather that it must be executed under appropriate weather conditions to ensure its effectiveness.

He noted that carrying out cloud seeding without conducive conditions not only risks failing to achieve the desired results, but could also lead to wasted operational costs.

Uggah said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) will hold an operational meeting tomorrow regarding the cloud seeding operation to be executed.
