Sarawak to begin exporting electricity to Brunei in 2028, says premier

KUCHING, Oct 5 2026: Premier Abang Johari Openg has said Sarawak will begin exporting electricity to Brunei in 2028 as part of efforts to expand energy cooperation with neighbouring countries and generate additional revenue for the state.

He noted thaty Sarawak currently shares energy with West Kalimantan and Sabah, with Brunei expected to follow suit in 2028, pointing out that Sarawak is targeting a power generation capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW)—or 10,000 megawatts (MW)—by 2030, increasing to 15 GW (15,000 MW) by 2035.

“Sarawak only requires 7 gigawatts (GW) for its current industries; however, if our industrial sector expands, we can certainly increase our energy utilization, aiming for an output of 15 GW (15,000 MW) by 2035.

“God willing, Brunei will be next in 2028, followed by exports to Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia. This translates to additional revenue for Sarawak,” he said at the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) gala dinner last night.

Abang Johari added that the available surplus energy capacity serves as a draw for investors, particularly for industries requiring affordable energy supplies.

He explained that the influx of new investments would create high-paying job opportunities and establish business value chains that open up prospects for local businesses as well.

“Once we have energy supplies, it becomes a draw for investment, as energy-intensive investments naturally gravitate toward locations offering affordable energy.

“So, if we have this, investments will certainly follow, creating high-paying jobs and establishing value chains across various sectors, including local businesses.

“If this happens, it means we have new business opportunities,” he explained.
