After PH victory in GE14, Sarawakians in huge numbers applying to join PKR

KUCHING, May 29, 2018 - There is a sudden surge in the number of applications, including from supporters of the  BN parties, to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in Sarawak,  said its Wanita chief Norhanim Mokshen yesterday.

Sarawak PKR Wanita chief Norhanim Mokshen says more Sarawakians now want to be PKR members

She said she does not know whether BN YBs are among the applicants as all applications for PKR membership are sent to the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur for processing and approval.

"Yes, there is a huge number of applications from Sarawakians to be members after the Pakatan Harapan (PH) won the May 9 general election," she told reporters.

Norhanim, who is also PH southern zone women chief, said she does not know the number of PKR members in Sarawak because the membership list is kept by the party headquarters.

With the sudden interest among the Sarawakians to join PKR of late, she believed that PKR and its PH partners DAP and Amanah, would have a better chance of winning more seats in the state election due in 2021.

"Our confidence  has already been enhanced when PH won 10 seats in this general election," she said, adding that this was the best result ever achieved by PH in Sarawak.

In the election, DAP won six while PKR, four. Although Amanah did not win any seat, its total number of votes was commendable.

Independents Larry Sng won in Julau and Jugah Muyang in Lubok Antu, and both have joined PKR.

Norhanim said the chances of PH capturing the state government from the PBB-led BN in the 2021 state election cannot be ruled out.

She said many people did not give a chance for PH to beat the Umno-BN federal government, but when all the results were announced and tallied, PH has more parliamentary seats.

Norhanim said the same scenario in Sarawak can happen in 2021.

With PH helming the federal government, the possibility is there, she added.

She said after Hari Raya next month, PKR Wanita wing will start making early preparations for the 2021 state election.

She added all the 31 Wanita branches will start moving to the ground and engage with the people.
