Accepting Sarawak BN would be a betrayal of trust given to PH

We refer to the recent news that the component parties of Barisan Nasional Sarawak are contemplating forming a state coalition with Pakatan Harapan.

Simon Siah, Sarawak PKR deputy Youth chief
We, the Pakatan Harapan Sarawak Youth Wing, with one voice strongly oppose such move because the act of accepting Barisan Nasional Sarawak into Pakatan Harapan would be a betrayal of the trust given to Pakatan Harapan, especially with the long standing record of the oppressive policy against the natives by BN Sarawak.

The natives of Sarawak have for half a century been intimidated to believing that they have to obey their BN warlords to the extent that the thinking of “anang ngelaban perintah” (do not go against the government) is firmly entrenched in their minds.

Sarawakians have been ruled by fear and have been solely at the MERCY of their political warlords. Headmen who were thought to be opposing the political warlords were removed, villages who supported opposition parties, were intimidated that their “minor rural project” funds would be allocated elsewhere.

Even Sarawakians in town were so fearful to even speak their voice or join political parties of their choice for fear of repercussions such as having their employment terminated or their business affected. WE HAVE FOR HALF A CENTURY LIVED IN FEAR UNDER BARISAN NASIONAL SARAWAK.

GE14 shows that the people of Sarawak are finally ready to wake up and make a stand. The Bidayuhs in Southern Sarawak made their voices heard loud, the Ibans in the heart of Sarawak made their voices heard clearly, the Malays and the Chinese in the town all wanted change.

Pakatan Harapan has become its namesake - HOPE - we are the hope of the people of Sarawak. Many Sarawakians all over the State has finally see that it is possible to topple an oppressive regime through peaceful and democratic means. Sarawakians are now EMPOWERED.

How then can we now go back on our word and accept an oppressive regime such as the Barisan Nasional Sarawak who have for years plundered and stolen from Sarawak?

More so when it was done during the long tenure of BN Sarawak’s leader who is now the TYT, Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, whose policies displaced millions of natives of Sarawak, when land grabbing was rampant and the natives made to be squatters on their own land?

The idea of Barisan Nasional Sarawak joining Pakatan Harapan is incomprehensible for many Sarawakians so long as the policy of Barisan Nasional remains the same.

We have had enough of the oppressive regime under Barisan Nasional and we do not want Pakatan Harapan to be just a mirror image of Barisan Nasional.

Trust that Pakatan Harapan Sarawak can win in the upcoming state election on our own merits and that we stand on our principles that we have strongly upheld from day one.

Have faith that Sarawakians are no longer the “anang ngelaban perintah” generation. We are now the generation of change and we will make Sarawak better under Pakaran Harapan than it has been for the 55 years under Barisan Nasional.- May 12, 2018
