Of late, leaders of local parties, especially from Gagungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) have expressed their concerns at the legal action brought by Petronas against the state and federal governments.

On Jan 12, Petronas filed a motion at the Federal Court seeking clarity on the legal and regulatory framework governing its operations in Sarawak, naming both the federal and Sarawak state governments as respondents.

The application sought for determination by the Federal Court on the legal position applicable to Petronas’ operations in Sarawak, to ensure that the company continues to operate in full compliance with the applicable laws and sound governance practices.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said's statement in Parliament that Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) did not contain provision on the ownership of oil and gas resources in Sarawak and Sabah caused widespread anger among Sarawakians.

The Abang Johari-Anwar meeting took place before both leaders attended the 148th Menteri Besar and Chief Ministers meeting held at the Parliament house.

The meeting was chaired by Anwar. and brought together Menteri Besar and Chief Ministers from all over the country to discuss issues of national and state interests.

The meeting was to present and discuss emerging matters, presentations and information, feedback reports from the states, as well as other matters that require attention and joint coordination between the federal government and governments of all the states.

Sri Aman Division Resident Mahra Salleh said the study aims to ensure that the fish always breeds in the Sungai Batang Lupar area throughout the year and not just seasonally.

"The study will involve monitoring the mating season of the fish species in question, including the egg production time and the growth period of the fish fry in Sungai Batang Lupar.

"The data from this study will enable us to implement efforts to conserve the fish in the river in question and subsequently ensure that its supply is not cut off among fish-based product operators including its enthusiasts in Sri Aman," he said.

He said this when met by the media during the inauguration of the ikan bulu-based product processing hub in Kampung Pasir Panas here today.

Apart from that, according to Mahra, the fish also has the potential to be promoted as one of the products to attract domestic and foreign tourists to Sri Aman in the future.

"If we talk about the tourism products available in Sri Aman Division, we have kelulut honey products in Lubok Antu, bead production, Gunung Lesung and the iconic one is the Benak Festival.

"All these products will enable Sri Aman Division to assist the government in achieving the target of between four and five million tourists entering Sarawak this year," he said.

The ikan bulu-based product processing hub is the first hub for processing this fish species to be opened in Sri Aman area by its entrepreneur, Nur 'Izzati Zalaluddin.

The hub processes a total of 250 kilogrammes of ikan bulu purchased from fishermen to produce a total of 200 ready-to-eat products with a profit of RM3,000.

The precautionary measure was taken to ensure public safety while further investigations are carried out by the relevant authorities.

Minister of Transport Lee Kim Shin said that upon receiving the report, the police, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 6 Miri and related agencies were mobilised to the location to conduct initial monitoring and investigations.

He also visited the site and attended the Miri Division Disaster Management Committee coordination meeting to ensure that immediate action was taken in an unified manner.

“The gas samples have been sent to the Malaysian Chemical Department Laboratory, Bintulu Branch for further analysis.

“So far, both pile holes that emitted gas have been covered with canvas and a worker has been placed at the construction site for safety purposes. No injuries have been reported and the situation is under control,” he said in a media statement on Monday.

According to him, as a precautionary measure, all construction work has been stopped immediately and the project site has been completely closed until the investigation by the Sarawak Minerals and Geosciences Department (JMG) is completed.

The Senadin Assemblyman added that the JMG is scheduled to conduct further investigation on 9 February to gain confirmation regarding the detected gas capacity.

Lee also advised the surrounding residents to avoid any open burning activities and the use of firecrackers, especially ahead of the Chinese New Year celebration, in addition to complying with safety instructions issued by the authorities.

However, class sessions at SK Tudan are allowed to continue as usual, but activities near the project site must be avoided to reduce any risks.

The Sarawak government, he stressed, will continue to monitor the situation from time to time and ensure that public safety is always prioritised.
