Kuching (Jan 17, 2012): Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (SADIA) secretary general Nicholas Mujah today urged the federal government to further extend the deadline of receiving applications for the 1Malaysia People’s Assistance (BR1M) by three months.
He said the deadline, which was first extended to Feb 10, should be further extended to allow more rural people to get and submit them the forms.
He believed that many of those who had not received and submitted their forms were from the rural areas.
“I urge the government to make sure that they also benefit from the assistance,” he added.
“In my rounds to the rural areas of Sri Aman Division last week, many rural people in the remote longhouses are unaware that the government wants to give RM500 under BR1M to those whose incomes are less than RM3,000 a month,” he told reporters here.
“As such, the government must find ways and means to let more rural know about the assistance. Poor communications and dissemination of information is the reason why many rural people, especially the Ibans, do not about BR1M,” he said.
He said using radio and newspapers alone was insufficient to inform the rural people because they were unable to get radio reception and that they did not get to read the newspapers.
In other areas that he had visited, Mujah said there were not enough forms available.
“I hope that those responsible should bring more forms for distribution. They should know that there is no copy machine in the rural areas for them to make photocopies of the forms,” he said.
Mujah said since it was safe to assume that almost, if not all, of the rural people had less than RM3,000 income a month, the authority should make sure that each and every rural household received the financial assistance. By Sematong Express
