Body of 3-year old found, search for three other persons on-going after their boat capsized in interior Baram

MARUDI, July 21 2026 : Operations have been initiated to search for three persons - two men and a woman - who have been reported missing when a long boat they were in, capsized in Baram while they were on their way to a clinic two days ago.

However, only the body of a three-year old infant has been found by a search party.

Marudi Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) station said its control centre received information regarding the incident believed to be a boat wreck via WhatsApp group.

It said following that, the control centre contacted Lomg Lama police station to obtain confirmation and further information regarding the incident.

“Based on the police report, on July 21, 2026 at approximately 11:23 am, the police received information from the public via the WhatsApp application informing that four individuals had reportedly not returned home since July 20, 2026 and were feared to be involved in the boat sinking incident,” the station said.

All the victims are from Kampung Long Selatong and were believed to be on their way to the Long San Health Clinic using a boat on July 20, 2026.

However, they failed to return home and could not be contacted by phone.

The villagers later found a boat believed to have been carrying the victims in a sinking condition in Sungai Seperot.

The station said based on information received from the Long Lama police station a three-year-old child victim was found by the public and the victim's body is now at the Long San Health Clinic.

History texbooks must be reviewed to reflect accurate information on formation of Malaysia, Kim Shin tells education ministry

SIBU, July 21 2026: A Sarawak minister has called for a review of the content of school history textbooks to ensure facts related to the history of Sarawak and the formation of Malaysia are presented accurately and in a balanced manner.

Transport Minister Lee Kim Shin said history textbooks need to contain true facts, especially regarding Sarawak's position in the formation of Malaysia, and hoped that the Malaysian Ministry of Education would review the existing content.

“We hope that the history of the formation of Malaysia, especially on historical events involving Sarawak, will be included in history textbooks..

“We hope that the Ministry of Education Malaysia will review the history so that the correct one is taught and learned by Malaysians,” he said after officiating the Sarawak Day 2026 History Exhibition at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang today.

Lee, who is also the minister responsible for the Sarawak Day 2026 celebration, explained that the exhibition was held to introduce Sarawak’s history to the public, starting from the Brunei Sultanate era, the rule of Rajah Brooke, the Japanese occupation, the British administration until Sarawak gained self-government on July 22, 1963.

He said that July 22, 1963 was a historic moment when the British administration handed over the power of government to the people of Sarawak, thus witnessing the formation of the state’s first Cabinet led by the first chief minister, the late Stephen Kalong Ningkan.

He said that the exhibition also displayed various documents related to the formation of Malaysia to provide the public with a more accurate understanding of the country’s history.

The State Legislative Member (SLM) for Senadin said that apart from highlighting the history of Sarawak, the exhibition also highlighted the achievements and progress made by the state since gaining self-government and after the formation of Malaysia.

Lee encouraged more Sarawakians, especially school students, to visit the exhibition to delve into the state's history and appreciate the journey of the formation of Malaysia.

The Sarawak Day History Exhibition 2026 is a collaboration between the Sarawak Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Sarawak Protocol, Ceremonies and Event Management Unit, Sarawak State Library, Sarawak National Archives, Sarawak Museum Department and TVS.

Also present were the Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang Ming Tee, Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment of Sarawak, Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Administration) Felicia Tan Ya Hua, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dzulkornain Masron and Deputy Resident of Sibu Division, Christopher Ranggau Unting.

 

 

In his Sarawak Day's message, Tun Wan Junaidi has likened Sarawak to be the "Jewel of Malaysia"

KUCHING, July 21 2026: Governor Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has likened Sarawak to be the “Jewel of Malaysia” because of its wealth of natural resources.

He said it is also because of its unique social structure consisting of more than 30 ethnic groups living in peace and harmony.

In his message in conjunction with the Sarawak Day’s celebration on July 22, the governor also said Sarawak continues to make history by boldly stepping forward to determine its own course.

“Sarawak Day, which is celebrated every year, carries a very deep meaning, not just a public holiday, but a symbol of the revival of the struggle to uphold dignity, identity, and a new turning point in history that forms a developed region in Malaysia today.

“One of the most significant things about Sarawak Day is its role as an important platform to educate and educate the younger generation about what is written and implied in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

“This celebration fully affirms the status of Sarawak not just as an ordinary state, but as a territory and an equal partner that formed the Federation of Malaysia as written in the Constitution and implied in the Constitutional documents of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” Wan Junaidi emphasised.

“Today we are able to enjoy prosperity and celebrate Sarawak Day or other festivals every year because we have very strong racial unity and political stability.

“Sarawak's strength lies in its multi-racial people—Malays, Dayaks, Chinese, Indians, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Melanau, and various other indigenous communities who aim for the well-being of Sarawak and its people.,” he noted.

The governor called on Sarawakians to continue to strive to form a prosperous society with mutual respect and shared values that contribute to harmony. Racial unity and political stability are the pillars of harmony that can guarantee the development of Sarawak, and the responsibility to maintain this peace does not only lie on the shoulders of the Government and leaders, but also in the hands of each of its citizens.

 He also called on all parents, educators, educational institutions and Sarawakians to continue to cultivate a culture of love for knowledge, exploring the fields of science, technology, engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), the digital economy and innovation.

“The world is changing so fast, and the future will not wait for anyone,” he said, adding that “ we need to ensure that the younger generation is not only able to adapt to change, but emerge as leaders who create solutions, explore new opportunities and build the future of this Region with expertise, thinking and high values of integrity.”
