Sarawak DAP condemns BN govt for tabling Sedition (Amendment) Bill

KUALA LUMPUR, April 7, 2015 - Sarawak DAP today condemns the Barisan Nasional government for tabling the Sedition Act (amendment) Bill for the first reading in Parliament today.

Among others, it provides that any talk of a State seceding from Malaysia as seditious.
"This is a travesty to the terms in the formation of Malaysia," Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said in a statement.

He said it was once argued in the Sarawak Council Negri before we agreed to form Malaysia that the right to secede is an implied condition for the Malaysia Agreement.

"Now, with this Bill, such right will be criminalised by the Federal Parliament.

"What is even worse is that once you are charged under the amended Act, there is no right to be bailed, you stay in lockup/jail until the whole case is over," Chong, who is also the State Assemblyman for Kota Sentosa, said.

He said all the party members of parliament will oppose the Bill.

"I call upon Sarawak BN MPs to also oppose the Bill for the sake of Sarawak and to protect the Constitutional rights of Sarawak.

"Let us put aside our individual political views and belief and put the interest of Sarawak above everything," he appealed.
