Despite our repeated reminders, cable thefts still occur, says SEB

Cable theft is a serious crime that can cause death or serious injury, in addition to power outage, equipment and financial loss. SEB has been working closely with the police to curb this societal menace and every theft case is reported and investigated.

KUCHING, April 7, 2015-  Sarawak Energy Berhad has expressed deep regret over the death of a man at a substation in Matang on Monday morning.

The unfortunate incident was caused when the individual was electrocuted in a suspected attempt to steal 11,000 volt power cable connected to a switchgear.


“We are saddened by this tragic death, regardless of the circumstances. Despite our constant reminders in the media and the security measures put in place to deter thieves and curb cable theft and vandalism, this dangerous activity still persists, “SEB's Chief Operating Officer Lu Yew Hung in a statement today.

The incident affected power supply for over five hours to Taman Sri Matang, Sacofa Sri Matang, Lee Ling 3, Lee Ling 4 and Lee Ling Villa.

“In 2014 alone, SEB spent a total of RM3.4 million to replace stolen items as a result of cable theft and vandalism and has stepped up mitigation measures which include reinforcing security at its substations and installation of CCTVs at certain facilities.

"Regular patrolling at theft prone areas are also being done to better secure our facilities,” Lu added.

He said SEB has given constant reminders through printed media, radio campaigns, exhibitions, distribution of leaflets and also goes to schools to inculcate awareness and educate the public on the danger of electrical infrastructure and facilities.

Lu said SEB would like to appeal for cooperation from the public to stop cable and metal theft.

He said members of public can report suspicious activities or individuals lurking near electrical equipment or facilities by contacting SEB Customer Care Centre at 1-300-88-3111.
