SIBU, July 22 2026: Premier Abang Johari Openg tonight announced that Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) had begun its first oil production of 800 barrels per day at the Adong Kechil West (AKW) field near Marudi, this week.
“ With this new and historic production that is equivalent to 24,000 barrels per month, after 50 years since the last onshore production, Sarawak is on the right track to go downstream particularly in the production of ammonia and blue hydrogen,” he said in speech at the Sarawak Day’s celebration here.
He said the production of the oil by Petros is a gift to the people of Sarawak.
“I was also informed by Petros that the oil production comes from just one well. There are other wells as well.
“It means Sarawak is now playing a major role in the oil and gas sector,” he said.
“This achievement speaks well of the engineering capability of Sarawakians thus proving that Sarawak is well-equipped to be a strong player in the oil and gas industry, including derivatives from methane gas.
“This is the big thing for Sarawak in that we celebrate Sarawak Day this year. Now Sarawak is a big player in the oil and gas industry which is run by Sarawakians themselves,” he stressed.
Abang Johari said the second gift to the people of Sarawak is that the state-owned AirBorneo has made its international flight from Kuching to Singapore today.
“This maiden flight is not just opening a new route, but symbolizes the beginning of a new era in the development of Sarawak’s air transport network in the region,” he said.
The premier also announced that AirBorneo will fly to Jakarta in two months’ time.
“It reflects our confidence in Sarawak’s ability to build a more efficient, competitive and future-oriented transportation system.
He said AirBorneo is a manifestation of the Sarawak government’s commitment to strengthen ties, stimulate trade, expand the tourism sector and attract more investment to the state.
“At the same time, it will open up more opportunities for the people and the business community to connect with a wider market, including introducing products such as Dabai fruit.
“Perhaps in the future, AirBorneo will have a menu of Dabai fruit from Song and Kanowit for international routes such as Kuching/Singapore so that our unique products are known to the world,” he explained.
Two days ago, AirBorneo made its maiden flight from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur.
The premier stressed that AirBorneo also complements the modern transportation ecosystem that the state government developing through ports, road networks, airports and the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system.
“All of these initiatives complement each other in creating a more efficient, sustainable and integrated mobility network,” he said.
Sarawak Governor Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi graced the Sarawak Day’s celebration.
Among those present were Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof, three Deputy Premiers Douglas Uggah, Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Dr Sim Kui Hian, minister in charge of the celebration Lee Kim Shin, federal ministers from Sarawak, state ministers and Speaker Asfia Awang Nasar.
