Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak submits four draft reviews of Adats to Sarawak Attorney-General's Chambers for legal review

KUCHING, July 29 2026: Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak (MAIS) has submitted four draft reviews of Adats (Customary Laws) to the Sarawak Attorney-General's Chambers for legal review.

The matter was conveyed to Sarawak Secretary  Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki during a courtesy call by head of MAIS (Council for Native Customs and Traditions Sarawak) Dr Neilson Ilan Mersat at Wisma Bapa Malaysia yesterday.

According to a statement issued by MAIS, the four drafts comprise Adat Iban, Adat Bidayuh, Adet Kayan and Adet Kenyah.

The statement said the initiative forms part of MAIS' ongoing efforts to modernise the Adats through reinterpretation, enhancement and the introduction of new provisions to ensure they remain relevant to the dynamic and modern lifestyles of today's communities.

The initiative also reflects the Sarawak government's continued commitment to preserving the customary heritage of the state's diverse communities while ensuring its implementation remains practical and responsive to present-day needs.

During the meeting, Abu Bakar also congratulated Dr Neilson on his appointment as the head of council for the 2026–2029 term.

Also present was the council secretary Elsie William.
