KUCHING, Sept 3 2026: Premier Abang Johari Openg said the state government is leaving it to the Election Commission (EC) to decide if the proposed state electoral boundaries, now being put on public display, could be used in time for the coming state election.
He said the draft of proposed electoral boundaries, after being processed, will be put for public display for the second time time later.
The second display will include the feedback and recommendations from the public and the state government.
The first display of the draft is being held from Sept 1 to 30. However, the date of the second display has yet to be announced.
The term of the Sarawak Assembly expires in February next year.
Under the proposed electoral boundaries, 17 new state seats will be added, making the total to 99 in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (SLA).
SLA amended the State Constitution in 2024 to add the new state seats.
EC, apparently, took a long time to redraw the electoral boundaries to include the 17 new seats.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari said that the Sarawak government will take note of the proposed names of the SLA constituencies submitted by the EC through the public display of the draft of the state electoral boundaries.
Met by reporters after the opening ceremony of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) General Assembly and Convention at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), he noted that several SLA names are deemed as unusual.
However, he said the “unusual names” matter would not be an issue if they are referred to locations that actually existed.
According to him, there are areas or villages with certain names, including Pasir Pandak, which is indeed the name of a village in Sarawak.
