The university’s new name has been approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, following a recommendation by the university’s Board of Directors as a tribute to the first Governor of Sarawak following the end of foreign rule.

The name change follows the recognition of i-CATS as a full-fledged university by the ministry on Oct 20 2026.

Premier Abang Johari Openg, who approved the name change, said the new identity goes beyond a mere change of name and logo, rather, it reflects the university’s strategic direction to cultivate a highly skilled generation capable of contributing to the development of a technology-based industry and economy.

“We envision this university as a higher education institution that not only excels in producing knowledgeable and highly skilled graduates but also fosters holistic human capital—individuals of integrity and noble character who uphold the values of decorum in the pursuit and expansion of knowledge," he said today.

He said Sarawak’s progress must be driven by a generation that not only masters knowledge and technology but also possesses intellectual maturity, strength of character, and a sense of responsibility toward society.

"This balance serves as the foundation for nurturing a competitive, visionary generation capable of spearheading the sustainable development of Sarawak,” the premier stated.

Director General of Ministry of Higher Education Dr Azlinda Azman handed over a certificate of recognition of change to the university vice chancellor Dr Mohamad Kadim Suadi, witnessed by the premier and Minister of Higher Education Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, state Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Roland Sagah Wee Inn and Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dr Annuar Rapaee.
