KUCHING, DEC 1, 2014: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) is on track in the
development of Murum HEP with the testing of its first unit of power generating
turbine in progress.
SEB Vice President of Hydro Polycarp Wong said today that
the Chinese contractor - Three Georges Development Company (M0 Sdn Bhd - will hand over the first unit of turbine soon.
Murum HEP's spillway is also being tested for its reliability.
"The other three turbines are being tested in stages
for full commissioning by second quarter of next year," he said in a
statement.
“At the moment, we are doing a series of reliability
tests, including test on the spillway at work, of the dam.
“Murum HEP is unique as it has the tallest stepped chute
spillway in the world and is innovative in its design.
"As such, the study is of interest to many,
including dam designers, contractors and engineers.
“As part of the process, the team has taken precautionary
steps in anticipation of the spilling by doing a wash-down cleaning to remove
any debris on the spillway and demobilised all works downstream of the dam.
"Within this testing period, we will be vigilant and
enhance our safety precautions," Wong said.
He added:“We are excited about the progress of Murum HEP
and look forward to the handing over of the first unit from the contractor to
us soon."
Murum dam is the second hydroelectric project built by
SEB after Batang Ai HEP which was commissioned in 1985.
The main dam is a roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam
with a maximum height above the foundation of 141m.
The dam has a crest elevation of 546m above sea level.
Impoundment of the reservoir started on September 21, 2013 and has reached its
supply level.
