Sarawak Energy adopts three turtle conservation areas administered by Sarawak Forestry Corporation

KUCHING, August 28, 2016-   Sarawak Energy Berhad, the state's sole electricity provider, will provide an alternative solar scheme to three turtle conservation areas administered by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).

Under the scheme, SEB will adopt Pulau Talang Talang Kechil, Pulau Talang Talang Besar and Tanjung Datu National Parks under its corporate social responsibility programme.

Speaking at the handing over of turtle adoption certificates from SFC, SEB group chief executive officer Datuk Torstein Dale Sjotveit said that adopting the turtles is an on-going effort to support nature's conservation and through its CSR electrification programme.

"We will provide electricity to three nature's conservation areas through the use of an alternative energy source, solar power," he said, adding that these three areas currently use diesel generators to provide electricity with restricted hours of operation.

He said SEB  is engaging in this project to promote the use of renewable energy and support the management of turtle hatcheries initiatives in the area.

"SEB’s CSR efforts also focus on environmental conservation. Through this project, we use environmentally friendly technology and eliminate carbon emission from the existing diesel generators.

"This project, estimated at a cost of RM2 million, will reduce the high costs of energy generated via diesel generators as well as logistical challenges to transport diesel to these remote areas.

"The project will also eliminate the loud noises from the diesel generators which disrupt turtle activities in the area," he said.

SFC chief executive officer  Wong Ting Chung noted SEB's commitment and continuous support toward  SFC's nature conservation initiatives.

"SEB has been a significant partner in the implementation of various conservation programmes. We look forward to more collaboration with SEB and other corporate partners to ensure sustainable development in the state," he said, adding that such collaborations, SFC hopes to achieve more in terms of biodiversity conservation.
