KUCHING, June 24, 2017 - Following the success of a forum
on NCR land held in March, Dayak National Institute (DANI) and Dayak Dudong Association (PDD) are planning
to hold a dialogue with landowners at the longhouse of headman Berendam anak
Seliang in Durin Kiba, near Sibu, next month.
Dayak Dudong Association president Julius Enchana: Dayak landowners do not have authentic information on NCR land issues
Among those who will attend the dialogue are PBDSB
president Cobbold John Lusoi and a former Lands and Survey officer Matthew
Jeluing.
The dialogue,
organised by Dayak Nation Institute (DNI) and Dayak Dudong Association
(PDD), is to be held on July 8.
PDD president Julius Enchana, in a press statement, said
the dialogue will give more attention to the rural areas on NCR land issues.
He said the rural areas, especially the Dayak landowners,
are ignorant about the information on the "real issues" with regards
to NCR land problems.
"We found this ignorance in our past dialogues and
meetings with the landowners," he said.
He said it is for this reason that DANI and PDD have
decided to choose NCR Land Randau as the main topic in the dialogue in TR
Berendam longhouse.
He added the topic is well suited to the current
situation on NCR land issues.
Cobbold will talk on about the hardships faced by people
facing NCR issues at the coming talk on NCR land. He will also share strategies
to develop NCR land.
Apart from Cobbold, former Land and Survey officer Mathew
Jeluing is also one of the facilitators, and he will touch and explain the
sections of the Land Code section in more detail.
Nikodemus Singgai, DANI's surveyor, will explain the
importance of community mapping to defend the rights of NCR communities
The programme is expected to be attended by various
levels of society who have expressed their interest in listening to NCR issues.
According to William Mangor , DANI principal, said:
"We (DANI) have been successful in the NCR awareness programme throughout
Sarawak since April and we now carry out NCR awareness programmes to rural
areas and to longhouses to empower rural communities."
