KOTA KINABALU, Sept 11 2026: An interim measure regarding Sarawak’s long-standing claims is expected to be announced during the Malaysia Day celebrations in Kuching on September 16.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, however, stated that he would continue discussions with Premier Abang Johari Openg over the coming days to finalize the details of the claims.
“Regarding Sarawak, I believe that even though it is not included under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution, the same spirit should be taken into account.
“Therefore, I will continue discussions with the premier over the next few days.
“Hopefully, by September 16—Malaysia Day in Kuching—I will also be able to announce an interim measure for Sarawak,” he told a press conference after chairing the Malaysia Agreement 1963 Implementation Action Council (MTPMA63) meeting at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here today.
The prime minister noted that Sarawak had put forward views regarding the need to introduce a clearer formula under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution for special grants to Sarawak and Sabah.
“Sarawak has also shared its views on a formula that should be introduced to ensure clarity.
“The formula takes into account the country's financial position, capacity, as well as the minimum and maximum amounts that can be considered.
“I agree with this and have asked the Ministry of Finance and Sarawak to discuss the introduction of such a formula,” he said.
Abang, who was present at the press conference, welcomed the outcome of the discussions at the action council meeting, particularly on the agreement to determine a win-win formula between Sarawak and the Federal Government.
“I express my gratitude for the earlier discussion and the decision we have reached.
“I also wish to thank everyone for the agreement to establish a win-win formula between Sarawak and the Federation,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Anwar stated that the Federal Government had agreed to increase the interim payment to Sabah to RM1.5 billion starting this year, pending the continuation of negotiations regarding the claim for 40 percent of federal net revenue derived from Sabah.
According to him, the payment serves as an interim measure while negotiations proceed, taking into account the financial position and matters previously agreed upon.
