KUCHING, Sept 4 2026: Deputy Premier Dr Sim Kui Hian has revealed that Indonesia has allowed the Malaysian Royal Air Force (RMAF) aircraft to enter its airspace, if needed for the purpose of cloud-seeding for Sarawak.
Dr Sim made the revelation on his Facebook today.
However, he did not say much on the revelation.
Much of the toxic haze blanketing Sarawak comes, for the past few weeks, from Kalimantan where vast areas of forests have been devastated by fires.
Yesterday, Deputy Premier Douglas Uggah had said Sarawak Disaster Management Committee would conduct a three-day cloud seeding operations, targeting three dams and 13 catchment areas as well as to wash down the airborne pollutants, from Sept 3 to 5.
“The initial target of the operation is focused on the catchment area of Batang Ai dam before expanding to the catchment areas of Murum and Bakun dams, subject to the suitability of cloud formations and local weather conditions,” he told reporters at the RMAF base here.
The 13 catchment areas are in Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Kapit and Limbang Divisions.
Uggah said the resulting rainfall had the potential to reduce the concentration of airborne pollutants, thereby supporting efforts to address air quality deterioration and the impact of haze.
