Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Douglas Uggah said the request was conveyed by Premier Abang Johari Openg to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim early this afternoon.

“The prime minister, will in turn, submit the request to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for decision,” Uggah told reporters after chairing SDMC emergency meeting.

He added only Kuala Lumpur has the power to declare the state of haze emergency in the country.

“We have discussions with the premier and he has conveyed our proposal to the prime minister in according with a circular of the National Disaster Management Agency,” he said.

He said the emergency will only be confined to within a radius of 20 kilometres of Serian town.

He added all government departments and agencies as well as the private sector offices will have to be closed during the period of emergency.

However, he said only essential services, like banks, supermarkets and petrol stations are allowed to operate as normal.

Uggah explained the emergency will only be lifted when the Air Quality Index (API) reading is less than 500 level.

As at 4pm this afternoon, Serian registered an API reading of 514.
