KUCHING, Sept 1 2026: Dr Sim Kui Hian said Malaysia, with a population of about 34 million, needs more cardiologists to work either at the public or private hospitals.
He said presently there are only 400 cardiologists with 20 of them in Sarawak, working at the public and private hospitals.
Dr Sim, a cardiologist himself, said he would try his very best to get more cardiologists to be trained.
“With ageing, we definitely need a lot more cardiologist for the number one disease burden in Malaysia,”he said on his Facebook post.
He added it takes a minimum of three years to train a cardiologist.
“Luckily with the unexpected delay of Sibu and Miri Satellite Heart Centres, otherwise we will be in situation of having completed infrastructure but no resident cardiologists (just visiting cardiologists)”, Dr Sim, who is also the deputy premier and minister of public health, housing and local government, said.
He said for the first time in 25 years, six first year Cardiology fellows (general medical specialists started training in cardiology subspecialty), the biggest ever number of specialists in a year, at the Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan.
He said all of them - two Sarawakians and four from Peninsular Malaysia but have been serving for over 10 years - are from hospitals in Sarawak.
He expressed his grateful to the Ministry of Health (MoH) for helping and making possible of many medical specialist training in cardiology this year.
