MIRI, Sept 7 2026: More than RM10 million in allocations from the Unit For Other Religions (UNIFOR) has been channelled to the Senadin constituency over the past five years to help upgrade houses of worship and related facilities.
Transport Minister Lee Kim Shin said the assistance was aimed at providing better, safer and more comfortable infrastructure for houses of worship besides enabling religious organisations to continue playing their part in fostering closer community ties and interfaith harmony.
“The Sarawak Government values the diversity of our society and respects the development of all religions.
“As long as an effort contributes to community harmony and the wellbeing of the people, we will strive to provide support,” he said.
The Senadin Assemblyman said this when officiating at the Miri Buddhist Meditation Society’s 2026 Ullambana and Memorial Prayer Ceremony at the Buddhist Temple, Canada Hill here yesterday.
Dato Sri Lee said the allocations have also benefited the Miri Buddhist Meditation Society and the Buddhist Temple.
Meanwhile, speaking on the Ullambana celebration, he said it is more than a tradition, as it embodies important values such as filial piety, honouring one’s ancestors, practising compassion and performing charitable deeds.
He said these values should continue to be passed down to the younger generation so they understand the importance of cherishing family, respecting their elders and caring for the wider community.
Lee hoped more youths would be involved in charitable and community activities to ensure these values continue to be practised and carried forward for generations to come. -UKAS News
