LONG LAMA,Sept 20 2026: Distance and communication access are among the challenges faced by Elias Ayan, 52, from Long Sait, Ulu Baram in obtaining a motorcycle license before his wish is realised through the Class B2 Driving License Assistance Programme.
For the Penan resident, obtaining a license was not an easy task as the journey to Long Lama required hours through rivers and logging roads.
"The journey here takes about 13 hours, which is five hours by boat from Long Sait to Long Siut, Selungo. The journey takes a long time during the dry season.
"From Long Siut, the journey to Lapok takes another seven hours before reaching Long Lama," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after the B2 Driving License Assistance Programme handing over ceremony which was officiated by Deputy Minister of Transport Hasbi Habibollah at the SJKC Kee Tee Hall, Long Lama yesterday.
Elias is among 471 participants from Telang Usan who received benefits through the programme organised by the Telang Usan State Legislative Assembly (SLA) People's Service Centre in collaboration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak.
As a participant from the most remote location, Elias also received a helmet from JPJ Sarawak in appreciation for his commitment to participating in the programme.
"I am proud to finally have a motorcycle licence and thank the government for bringing the facility closer to the rural community," he said.
He hopes that the programme can be expanded to more remote areas such as Long Banga, to enable more residents in the area to have a licence.
