KOTA SAMARAHAN, Sept 2 2026: Communities experiencing water supply disruptions due to the current drought are urged to immediately report their situation to the provincial or district disaster management committee so that relief efforts can be delivered quickly and accurately.
Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-Being Development Minister Fatimah Abdullah said coordination between relevant departments continues to be strengthened to ensure adequate water supply to affected residents, including water tanker delivery and bottled drinking water distribution by the Social Welfare Department.
She said that priorities will be given to areas without piped water supply, relying on rainwater harvesting, gravity water systems, and alternative water sources such as the Sarawak Alternative Water Supply System (SAWAS).
"Areas without piped water supply, relying on rainwater harvesting or alternative systems, are indeed affected when faced with prolonged drought. Even river water sources in some areas are dwindling," she told reporters after opening ceremony of Sarawak Women@Work in Samarahan division.
Fatimah explained that the continued drop in river levels could affect water intake operations, thereby reducing water treatment capacity and the amount of water supplied to users.
Therefore, she advised residents to immediately report to the chairperson of the provincial or district disaster management committee so that further action could be taken.
She added that water distribution would be carried out systematically, taking into account the number of households and current needs to ensure that sufficient aid supplies are delivered.
Meanwhile, parts of Sri Aman and Betong divisions have been identified as drought-affected areas, particularly those relying on gravity-fed water supply systems.
She also hoped that cloud seeding would help increase water resources, especially in catchment areas that are the main source of water for residents.
