BANGKOK, Sept 14 2026: Sarawak is expected to attract investments totalling US$1 billion (approximately RM4.07 billion) in gas-based downstream industries, Premier Abang Johari Openg said, with the large-scale investment to involve Indorama Corporation and a Japanese company.
Indorama Corporation, a Singapore-based company, is a global producer of essential materials, which includes fertilizers, polymers, fibers, yarns, and medical gloves.
The premier said the investment will not only optimize the utilization of Sarawak’s gas resources but also has the potential to create high-value job opportunities and support the low-carbon industrial development agenda, particularly in Bintulu.
“This investment is expected to reach US$1 billion and certainly represents an effort to utilize our gas resources. It creates high-quality jobs and assists us in implementing low-carbon industrial programmes, especially in the Bintulu area,” he said when met while attending Gastech 2026 in Bangkok today.
Abang Johari added that a follow-up discussion between Indorama and Sarawak Petchem later is expected to finalize the details of the investment.
He noted that another meeting is expected to take place this October during a conference in Bangkok, which will be attended by a Sarawak delegation led by Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.
On Sarawak;s participation in GASTECH 2026, the premie said it has provided an opportunity to highlight the state's role in the development of the Asian Power Grid, as well as to discuss the energy sector's direction in addressing climate change and the global transition toward a low-carbon economy.
Sarawak, he said, continues to explore energy collaboration opportunities with Asian nations to ensure the sector's development remains relevant amidst the changing global energy landscape.
"Sarawak’s approach received a positive response from international participants, including those from Africa and Thailand.
'This will serve as the direction for us to develop Asia’s energy capabilities and align Sarawak’s economic trajectory with our partners across Asia,' he said.
Sarawak’s participation in Gastech 2026 opens up broader opportunities to strengthen the state’s position within the regional energy value chain, particularly through the development of downstream industries, the creation of high-value jobs, and the transition towards a low-carbon economy.
