Hard for PAS to remain in PR, says Wong

KUCHING, Sept 26, 2014:  Sarawak DAP Youth said that is getting harder for PAS to remain in the Opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) because of its extreme religious views.

"If the party continues to go against the policies and the platforms of PR and insists on a single-religion and single-ethnicity policy, not only will PAS be unable to stay in PR, it will also be shunned by the people," Sarawak DAP Youth chief Wong King Wei said in  a statement today.

Wong King Wei (picture, left) says the DAP cannot work with a party that betrays the trust of the people.

He said that he was disappointed with PAS's actions and feel that there was no more space for further cooperation with the party.

Citing an example, he said:"In July Sarawak DAP had stopped attending all PAS activities until it abandons the single-religion policy.

"In addition to that, DAP is unable to accept the betraying attitude of the four former PAS Selangor executive councillors in supporting  former Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim, as well as the constant flirting with UMNO," he said.

Wong, who is also the Padungan state assemblyman, was commenting on yesterday's statement by PAS Youth vice head Khairil Nizam Khiruddin that the Islamic-based party would not rule out the option of leaving PR when "time is right".

Wong said that whether PAS would pull out of PR or not was not the main question,  but rather with its own "betraying actions".

He said that PR was formed to defeat the racial and religious based political ideologies of UMNO and to fight against Barisan Nasional government.

Wong said that it had been agreed upon by DAP, PKR and PAS  on the PR's Common Policy Platform that would be implemented the moment PR formed the federal government.

He said  the Common Policy Platform  would be the one that gave emphasis to the people's welfare.

"The people's welfare will mean that the people are supreme, and no embezzlement of public fund and the implementation of a fair and just policies in politics, economy, culture and education, regardless of race and religion," Wong said.

He said that the problems in PR cropped up because of  the constant betrayal and defiance of the Pakatan Agenda by PAS, thus the party was no longer relevant in PR.

"DAP cannot work with a party that betrays the people, what more to say to fight together as a member of the coalition," Wong said.

He said that PAS' insistence to implement the Hudud Law and establish an Islamic nation was going against what was agreed upon in the Pakatan Agenda.
