PUTRAJAYA, July 28 2026: The Sarawak government has requested the federal government to increase allocations for the exploration and identification of the potential of mineral wealth and to boost the development of downstream industries in the state.

He said the federal government allocated RM1.36 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) and RM1.91 million under the 13MP, an amount that was deemed disproportionate to the size of Sarawak and its potential mineral resources,
Awang Tengah said the Sarawak government allocated a large funds for geological and mineral resource studies through 12MP and 13MP.
“Sarawak has allocated RM15 million under the 12MP and RM18 million under the 13MP to conduct studies on the existence and potential of mineral resources throughout the state,” he said.
He urged the federal government to consider increasing the allocation to Sarawak to be on par with other states.
“Johor received an allocation of RM6.5 million, while Sabah, Perak and Kedah each received RM4.5 million for the same purpose, from the federal government,” he said at the National Mineral Council meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.
Awang Tengah said the increased allocation would strengthen geological mapping and mineral exploration efforts, thus enabling a more accurate assessment of Sarawak's mineral resource wealth as well as attracting more investment and downstream industry development in the future.
The meeting also discussed various matters related to the development of the country's mineral industry, including efforts to strengthen cooperation between the Federal Government and state governments in ensuring that the management of the country's mineral resources is implemented strategically and sustainably.
