Search operation is still on for 14-year old schoolboy, who was dragged underwater by a crododile yesterday

DARO, Dec 27 2025: The search and rescue operation (S&R) resumed this morning for a 14-year old schoolboy who was dragged underwater by a crocodile as his friends watched in horror late yesterday afternoon.

The incident happened near the jetty of Jingga longhouse, Pulau Bruit, Daro, about 5.45pm when the boy, identified as Augustine Fernando anak Nyalong, and his four friends were prawning along the bank of Sungai Kelai, a river outlet of Sungai Paloh.

According to a statement from the Daro Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) station, the crocodile emerged suddenly from underwater and attacked and dragged the boy underwater.

The statement said the friends tried to help him, but failed and they could only watch him being pulled underwater.

“The four then rushed back to their longhouse on what was happening and asking the longhouse residents to look for the boy,” the statement said.

It said the residents rushed to the spot where the incident took place, but could not do anything.

The search party was made up of five Bomba personnel, eight policemen, six Civil Defence Department personnel, three from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and 22 residents of Jingga longhouse.

The search covers a stretch of 3km along the bank of Sungai Paloh.

14-year old boy believed to have been dragged underwater by a crocodile

DARO, Dec 26 2025: A 14-year old boy is believed to have been dragged underwater by a crocodile while he was prawning at the bank of Sungai Kelai, not from Rumah Jingga longhouse late this afternoon.

Daro Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) station said the incident happened near a jetty of the longhouse on Pulau Bruit about 5.45pm.

A search and rescue operation was later initiated to look for the boy, identified as Augustine Fernando anak Nyalong, the station said in a statement.

Apart from the Bomba personnel, the police from Daro station and the villagers are also involved in the search and rescue operation.

At 6.30pm, the operation was halted and will resume tomorrow morning.

22-year old person with disability dies in a fire that destroys 20 Iban squatter houses

BINTULU, Dec 26 2025: A 22-year old person with disability died when a fire razed a colony of 20 Iban squatter houses located at the other side of Sungai Sangan, just opposite Pekan Sangan, Tatau, last night.

Firemen from Tatau Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) station found the charred remains of the victim after they have doused the fire.

In a statement, the station said the fire rendered 97 squatters from 20 families homeless.

It said it received an emergency call about 11.18pm from one of the squatters.

However, efforts to put off the fire were hampered as there was no access road to the area and that they have to use boats to ferry the fire fighting equipment to the other side of the river.

The firemen, however, managed to save a house and a primary school.

The charred body of the victim was found about 2.35am on Dec 26.

The body was handed over to the police for further action.

After the fire was completely extinguished and the situation was safe, the team returned to the station.
