KUCHING, Aug 31 2016: Deputy Premier Douglas Uggah said Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has contacted Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup to raise the current haze situation in Sarawak and to facilitate engagement with Indonesia through established Asean channel.
He said Arthur is the deputy chair of sub-regional ministerial steering committee on transboundary haze pollution.
“Under the Asean Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution (AATHP), the sub-regional ministerial steering committee on transboundary haze pollution serves as an established platform for affected Asean member states to discuss and coordinate measures to address transboundary haze,” Uggah said after the SDMC emergency meeting today.
He said the transboundary haze is a regional issue that requires engagement between national governments through established regional and diplomatic channels.
“SDMC will continue to work closely with the federal government to ensure that Sarawak's concerns are conveyed through the appropriate national and Asean channels.
“Any proposal to aid neighbouring countries will be considered and coordinated by the federal government,” Uggah stressed.
He said there were 13,212 hotspots were detected in Kalimantan this month, saying that the latest regional monitoring and satellite analysis also indicate significant fire activity in parts of Kalimantan and Sumatra, with smoke haze having the potential to affect Sarawak.
