Social activist wants PMX to push for punitive enforcement against Asean members for causing haze pollution

KUCHING, Sept 2 2026: A social activist has called on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to push for a strict punitive enforcement mechanisms against ASEAN member states for causing haze pollution as Malaysians continue to suffer from haze year after year.

Voon Shiak Ni said the present haze crisis gives the  the federal government an important opportunity to place this issue of transboundary haze crisis affecting Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole firmly on the ASEAN agenda.

Malaysia need to address the yearly issue of haze affecting Malaysians and to emphasize strengthening current the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution (AATHP) enforcement and closing operational gaps over creating new punitive laws or full treaty overhauls.

The agreement recognises that fires and smoke originating in one country can cause serious environmental, economic and health consequences in another but  lack strict punitive enforcement mechanisms against member states,” she said in a statement today.

Voon said Sarawak has been experiencing haze year in and out  and this is not merely an environmental inconvenience and the severe haze affecting Sarawak today  has triggered a public health emergency.

Sarawak is suffocating and we are hopeful that the prime ministercan do more to ease the critical haze pollution in Sarawak and to make use of his position in ASEAN to  address the issue of enforcement and the issue of supranational authority with broad powers to impose penalties on a member state for failing to control pollution originating within its territory,” she said .

Voon stressed that an agreement without effective consequences risks becoming little more than a statement of intent and cannot help to resolve or control future  haze pollution  .

She said AATHP is a legally binding regional pact signed in 2002 in Kuala Lumpur to prevent, monitor, and mitigate land and forest fire haze,  ratified by all 10 ASEAN member states including Indonesia .

She said the core agenda of the AATHP is an agreement between all the member states to control and reduce smoke haze pollution through joint emergency response, national legislative steps, and regional cooperation .

She noted that Malaysia was  the  Chair of ASEAN last year in 2025 and being one of the active member state in ASEAN , stating that it is long overdue that Malaysia need to push for  strict punitive enforcement mechanisms against member states for causing haze pollution as Malaysians continue to suffer from haze year after year .

The present haze pollution in Sarawak is critical now with parts of Sarawak facing hazardous API exceeding 500 and  its not getting better today due to massive forest fires from Kalimantan,”
 she said .

Report to the authorities if you have water supply disruptions, Fatimah advises communities

KOTA SAMARAHAN, Sept 2 2026: Communities experiencing water supply disruptions due to the current drought are urged to immediately report their situation to the provincial or district disaster management committee so that relief efforts can be delivered quickly and accurately.

Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-Being Development Minister Fatimah Abdullah said coordination between relevant departments continues to be strengthened to ensure adequate water supply to affected residents, including water tanker delivery and bottled drinking water distribution by the Social Welfare Department.

She said that priorities will be given to areas without piped water supply, relying on rainwater harvesting, gravity water systems, and alternative water sources such as the Sarawak Alternative Water Supply System (SAWAS).

"Areas without piped water supply, relying on rainwater harvesting or alternative systems, are indeed affected when faced with prolonged drought. Even river water sources in some areas are dwindling," she told reporters after opening ceremony of Sarawak Women@Work in Samarahan division.

Fatimah explained that the continued drop in river levels could affect water intake operations, thereby reducing water treatment capacity and the amount of water supplied to users.

Therefore, she advised residents to immediately report to the chairperson of the provincial or district disaster management committee so that further action could be taken.

She added that water distribution would be carried out systematically, taking into account the number of households and current needs to ensure that sufficient aid supplies are delivered.

Meanwhile, parts of Sri Aman and Betong divisions have been identified as drought-affected areas, particularly those relying on gravity-fed water supply systems.

She also hoped that cloud seeding would help increase water resources, especially in catchment areas that are the main source of water for residents.

Delineation of state electoral boundaries should not have any element of gerrymandering to favour certain parties, says Mas Gading MP

KUCHING, Sept 2 2026: Mas Gading Member of Parliament Mordi Bimol expressed his wish that the delimitation process of the state electoral boundaries must be carried out fairly, transparently, and free from any element of "gerrymandering" for the political interests of certain parties.

He said delineating electoral boundaries cannot be used as a tool to manipulate election results, but must instead be based on the democratic principle of "one person, one vote".

“I would like to reiterate my stance that I am not opposed to the proposal to add 17 new state assembly seats in Sarawak.

“The increase in representation is a right of Sarawak that can be considered to accommodate population growth and geographical size,” Mordi, who is also the deputy of youth and sportsm said in a statement.

He took note of the Notice of Recommendation for the Review of the Delimitation for federal and state electoral boundaries in Sarawak which is now officially displayed by the Election Commission (EC) from Sept 1 to 30, 2026.

He reiterated his stance that he is not opposed to the proposal to add 17 new state assembly seats in Sarawak.

“The increase in representation is a right of Sarawak that can be considered to accommodate population growth and geographical size,” he said.

Mordi said he agrees with the inclusion of Serembu State Legislative Assembly (SLA) into Mas Gading parliamentary constituency due to historical, cultural, dialectal, and local relations  factors of the Bidayuh community dealing in the Bau district.

“However, in terms of voter ratio, although most of the seats under Mas Gading appear to be quite balanced, Serembu SLA only achieved around 76.6% of the average ratio of registered voters that it should.

“Serembu SLA needs an expansion of the area or an increase in voters to achieve a fair and equitable balance,” he said.
