This year's Gawai Dayak organising committee formed, with deputy minister Penguang Manggil as its chairman

 

KUCHING, Feb 24 2026: This year’s Gawai Dayak organising committee has been formed, with Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Penguang Manggil, as chairman, who will lead to coordinate the initial preparations for the celebration scheduled to begin next May.

Deputy Premier and chairman of the Gawai Dayak 2026 main committee Douglas Uggah Embas said today’s meeting is to ensure that the planning for the programmes is implemented in an orderly, structured and high-impact manner.

He said this year’s celebration needs to be implemented with higher standards and meticulous planning, in line with the Sarawak government's aspiration to make Gawai Dayak the state's main cultural event that can elevate the heritage and identity of the Dayak community to a wider level.

Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Felicia Tan Ya Hua was appointed as the deputy chairman of the organising committee.

State Public Works Department director Dr Cassidy Morris was appointed as  secretary, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Desmond Douglas Jerukan as deputy secretary and Assistant State Accountant Rolend Tama as the treasurer.

Among those who attended the meeting were Deputy Minister in the  Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Gerawat Gala, state cabinet ministers and deputy ministers.

Gerawat was last year’s chairman of the organising committee.
