KUCHING, Aug 30 2026: Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development Minister Fatimah Abdullah said that she is deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic death of a five year old young boy in Sibu two days ago.
She said no child should ever have to experience violence of any kind, and the loss of a child is an unimaginable tragedy for any family.
“I understand that the police investigation is ongoing and that a suspect has been remanded to assist with investigations,” Fatimah said in a statement.
“We must allow the authorities to conduct their work thoroughly and without interference. It would therefore be inappropriate for me to speculate on the circumstances, motive or responsibility for the incident at this stage,” she added.
Fatimah said she will direct the state Welfare Department and other relevant agencies under her ministry to monitor the situation closely and to ensure that appropriate support is made available to the affected family, particularly in terms of psychosocial and welfare assistance.
“This tragic incident also reminds us that child safety is a shared responsibility. We must remain vigilant and ensure that children are protected from violence, abuse and neglect, whether at home or within the wider community,” she said.
She urged members of the public not to spread unverified information, photographs or speculation that could further distress the family or compromise the investigation.
According to Sibu police, a five-year-old boy died after he was allegedly slashed at a house in Jalan Rantau Panjang Jaya two days ago.
Sibu district police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said a man in his late 40s, believed to be a relative of the victim, has been detained to assist in investigations.
After the incident, the victim was taken to the Sibu Hospital Emergency Unit, where he was pronounced dead.
