KUCHING, Aug 28 2026: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living is investigating two cases involving traders over-charging their consumers.
The first case was reported by a consumer on Aug 26 where a trader in Sejingkat over-charged him by RM1.70.
According to the state ministry director Mathew Dominic Barin in a statement today, the trader charged the consumer RM13.20 for a product, while the displayed price was RM11.50, causing the consumer to suffer a loss of RM1.70.
“The consumer informed the trader about the price difference and requested that the price charged be based on the displayed price, but the trader insisted and refused to follow the price as displayed,” Matthew said.
He added the ministry enforcement team went to the premises and found that there was an offence under Section 12(1)(a), Consumer Protection Act 1999, namely giving a misleading impression of the price of goods displayed for trade.
In relation to this, he said the enforcement team seized a copy of the business ordinance license, four units of sales receipts, a unit of price tags and a unit of promotional price tags for further investigation.
Matthew said the second case was also detected on Aug 26 at a premises in Stutong, adding that the inspection results found that there was an offence under Section 12(1)(a), Consumer Protection Act 1999, namely giving a misleading impression regarding the price of goods displayed for trade.
He added the enforcement team has seized a copy of the business ordinance license and a pair of shoes for the purpose of further investigation.
He said the value of the seizure for the case is RM29.90.
Matthew said the two cases are being investigated under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 and further action will be taken in accordance with the provisions of the law in force.
He said the ministry will continue to intensify monitoring and enforcement to ensure that traders comply with the regulations set and do not mislead consumers regarding the price of goods displayed for trade.
