BETONG, Sept 26 2026: Premier Abang Johari Openg explained that any step to increase the number of parliamentary seats for Sarawak must first go through the established processes and procedures, including being tabled in parliament.
He said the number of seats to be added ultimately depends on the federal government and the relevant processes at the federal level.
"If there is to be an increase, the number of seats to be added is up to the government because it involves parliament," the premier was quoted by TV Sarawak (TVS) as saying at a press conference.
He was asked to respond to a clarification by the Election Commission (EC) that there was no plan at the moment to increase the number of parliamentary seats for Sarawak.
Abang Johari said any proposal to increase the seats must first be tabled in parliament, then the draft of the proposed electoral boundaries must be displayed to the public for views and recommendations.
He said the draft of the proposed electoral boundaries will be displayed fpr the second time after taking into consideration the views and recommendations from the public.
Abang Johari said he does not think that the EC's clarification conflicts with the stance of the Sarawak government in proposing for an increase in the number of parliamentary seats.
