KUCHING, Sept 26 2026: Federal Women, Family and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri explained that she and other Members of Parliament and representatives from Sarawak in the Federal Cabinet had raised the issue concerning parliamentary representation ratio formula allocation for Sarawak and Sabah.
She said the current discussions regarding the allocation of parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak are focusing more on determining a representation ratio formula rather than fixing a specific number of seats
She explained that the matter requires detailed joint deliberation from a legal perspective before the formula can be finalised.
She added the issue has been discussed by Premier Abang Johari Openg, Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim with a focus on structuring the ratio following the shift in Malaysia's composition after Singapore's departure from the Federation.
“Regarding these parliamentary seats — as discussed by the premier and chief minister with the prime minister — the focus is on structuring the ratio rather than a fixed number, because when Singapore left Malaysia, that one-third allocation effectively became vacant,” she said when met by reporters after an event at SMK Bako.
Nancy, who is also the federal Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, noted that the one-third formula needs to be discussed collectively from a legal standpoint before any decision is reached.
“So, the mechanics of establishing that one-third formula need to be discussed together from a legal perspective,” she explained.
She stated the Sarawak side team would first examine the formula to be discussed through the mechanism related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
